Q: Much of “American Sniper” took place in Iraq. Were those scenes filmed there or in a studio?

—Bob Markert, Roswell

A: The scenes that depicted Iraq in "American Sniper" were filmed in several locations, including Morocco, the California town of El Centro, which is east of San Diego, and at studios. The cast and crew spent 12 days filming in Rabat, Morocco, which stood in for several Iraqi locations, according to film industry websites.

Most of the filming took place in California. Sites included a Middle Eastern village set at the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch in Santa Clarita and in El Centro, just north of the U.S. border with Mexico. An abandoned milk factory in the town stood in for the building where Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper in the movie, and his unit are surrounded by insurgents in a climatic scene.

Q: We’ve collected our recyclable newspapers and magazines, but have had difficultly finding a donation center. Our friends have had similar concerns. Where can we recycle these?

—Mary Kay Poland, Marietta

A: Many kinds of recyclable materials, including paper products such as newspapers and magazines, can be dropped off at the RockTenn Company Recycling Center at 1775 County Services Parkway in Marietta, among other locations throughout the county.
