Q: Is Larry the Cable Guy portraying Col. Sanders in KFC’s new commercials?
—Terry Reed, McDonough
A: Comedian Darrell Hammond plays Col. Harland Sanders in the KFC commercials that began last month.
Hammond is known for his impressions and often portrayed President Bill Clinton, among many other politicians and celebrities, on “Saturday Night Live,” but the company’s former owner said Hammond doesn’t sound like the original Sanders.
John Y. Brown Jr., who bought what was then called Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1964, continued to use Sanders in commercials.
“I don’t think you make a gimmick out of somebody,” Brown told the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal. “I think they are making fun of the Colonel. It is such a fascinating story, I hate to see them tarnish it.”
He said the real Colonel “cussed like a sailor.”
Sanders was 90 when he died of leukemia in 1980.
