Q: Microsoft announced a problem with its Internet Explorer browser. We were all cautioned not to use it. Has that problem been solved or are we still cautioned not to use it?

—John Wall, Peachtree City

A: Microsoft issued an emergency security update on May 1 that fixes the bug in several versions of the Internet Explorer browser. The bug allowed hackers to take control of computers with versions 6 through 11 of the browser. If automatic updates have been turned on, the patch was downloaded to your browser.

A Microsoft response team spokesman wrote: “While we’ve seen only a limited number of targeted attacks, customers are advised to install this update promptly. For those manually updating, we strongly encourage you to apply this update as quickly as possible.”
