Q: What happened to Mark Hayes on “Good Day Atlanta” on Channel 5? I miss him.
—Jackie Harris, Union City
A: Hayes has been a morning anchor at KXAS-TV, an NBC affiliate in Dallas, since May. He left "Good Day Atlanta" in April after 10 years on the show. "When a viewer turns on the news in the morning, Mark is the kind of person they want to see," Susan Tully, NBC 5 vice president of news, said in a release when he was hired. Hayes tweets regularly and can be followed at @MORNINGMANIAC.
Q: All of the lottery machines in Georgia slowed to a crawl because of an update that Georgia Lottery installed over the weekend before the big Powerball drawing. With the Powerball jackpot the biggest ever, why would Georgia Lottery install an update that slowed the machines? Also, what is the purpose of these updates?

A: The software enhancements made on Nov. 25, which were related to "future game initiatives," were previously scheduled, Georgia Lottery spokeswoman Tandi Reddick told Q&A on the News in an email. Georgia Lottery software is frequently upgraded on Sundays, which usually is the slowest sales day of the week, she wrote. Riverdale's David Jackson won a $1 million consolation prize for matching five numbers in the record $579.9 million Powerball drawing of Nov. 28. The two winning tickets were sold in Missouri and Arizona.
