Q: I remember an article this year stating it was going to be a very active hurricane season. Have we had a storm make it to hurricane status? Wasn’t last year supposed to be an active season, but turned out to be rather calm?
—Eric Gronberg, Decatur
A: There have been 11 named storms this year – including two hurricanes – after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted an active storm season last spring. The NOAA predicted between 13 and 20 named storms, including between seven and 11 hurricanes for the storm season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. "It's not only quiet, but it's got the potential to be near record quiet for the Atlantic Basin," Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center, told The Huffington Post. Ten of 19 named storms in 2012 became hurricanes, and the average since 1950 is seven a year. This season's two hurricanes – Humberto and Ingrid – were minor, and only three hurricanes have hit the U.S. in November since 1851.
Q: What is the status of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware, who suffered a broken leg on March 31? Will he be able to resume his career?
—Linda Cochran, McDonough
A: Ware, who suffered a compound fracture of his right leg during a NCAA Tournament game against Duke, has been practicing and could see action in Louisville's season opener on Saturday. He didn't participate in a full-contact practice until Sunday. Ware, a junior, likely will be a reserve player this season, as he was last year. He played at Rockdale County High School.
