A teenager sitting on a couch inside a Clayton County apartment complex was killed after a stray bullet struck him early Tuesday.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m., authorities went to the complex in the 200 block of Upper Riverdale Road after learning that shots were fired from an assault rifle in the parking lot, Clayton police spokeswoman JaQuitta Williams said in a statement.

“Several people were in and around the area at the time of the incident at a celebration,” she said. “Devin Jackson, who was 18 years old, was struck as he sat on a couch inside an apartment.”

Jackson was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Right now,” Williams said, “our investigators are searching for suspects, and potential leads in the case.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Clayton County Police Department tip line at 770-477-3513.
