Following a night of looting, violence and peaceful protests in Ferguson, Mo. -- ending in the arrests of more than 80 people -- several news images have struck a chord online, including a photo that has drawn comparisons to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in China.

The Missouri town erupted following a grand jury's announcement that police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted on criminal charges after he shot and killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown in August.

In the photo taken Monday night, "a man stands with his hands raised in front of a row of militarized vehicles on the streets of Ferguson," according to USA TODAY. The confrontation, a single citizen before the state, has been immediately compared to a photo from the 1989 protests, which became an international flashpoint for China's pro-democracy movement.

The two aren't exact analogues: The Tiananmen Square protests ended in extreme bloodshed, and Monday's Ferguson photo might have been staged.

But it's resonating as only a few other images -- such as this one -- are.
