An hourslong SWAT standoff at a Brookhaven home ended when police entered the residence and found the barricaded man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Brookhaven police tried to coax 42-year-old Jermaine Maree out of his Colt Drive home after he reportedly assaulted two people on Saturday afternoon before barricading himself inside, authorities said.

The incident was the result of a domestic dispute involving one of the man’s family members and someone else, Brookhaven police Lt. David Snively told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police were called to a neighborhood off Chamblee Dunwoody Road about 1 p.m. and determined two people had been physically assaulted, he said.

Both suffered relatively minor injuries but one victim was taken to the hospital, according to police.

After negotiators were unable to contact Maree, North Metro SWAT officers entered the residence. Police discovered the man’s body while searching the home, Sgt. Carlos Nino said Saturday evening.

No police officers discharged their weapons during the standoff, police said, but the department has asked the GBI to investigate.

“No danger to the public remains at this time, and persons who previously sheltered in place and/or were evacuated from surrounding residences may return to the area,” Nino said.

Since March, Georgia-based Mana Nutrition has accumulated about 300,000 boxes of therapeutic food in its warehouse near Savannah, said Mark Moore, the organization’s co-founder and CEO. Each box includes 150 food packets, enough to feed a child for six weeks. Mana’s supply is awaiting shipment to countries in sub-Saharan Africa. “No one is being served by it sitting here,” Moore said. “It is just the sort of sadness of: Why would we not have it out there?” (Matt Odom for Mana Nutrition)
