A third suspect in a Panama City Beach gang rape was arrested Tuesday in DeKalb County.
George Kennedy, 21, was arrested in Decatur after being named in a warrant issued by the Bay County, Fla., sheriff’s office, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cynthia William said. Charged with sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, Kennedy is being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
Kennedy is the third suspect arrested in connection the attack, which was widely publicized after graphic video surfaced. Two other suspects — Delonte' Martistee, 22, and Ryan Austin Calhoun, 23 — were arrested Saturday. The Panama City News Herald reported that both of those men were students at Troy University in Alabama.
The attack, recorded on a cellphone video, happened sometime between March 10 and 12 in Panama City, Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen said at a previous news conference. Authorities learned of the assault when police in Troy, Ala., discovered the video while investigating a shooting.
McKeithen described the recording as the “most disgusting, sickening thing” he had ever seen. Several men can be seen surrounding an incapacitated woman on a beach chair.
“This is happening in broad daylight with hundreds of people seeing and hearing what is happening, and they are more concerned about spilling their beer than somebody being raped,” he said.
The victim reportedly told police that she thought she had been drugged at the time, and she did not remember the incident well enough to report it.
