For more than two months, a man accused of killing a young father at an Atlanta gas station eluded capture. But late last week, Demetrius Stroud was arrested in Chattanooga, according to police.

“We’re grateful this dangerous criminal is off the streets,” Atlanta police said in a social media post.

Around 7:20 p.m. on Feb. 1, a 911 caller reported someone had been shot at a Sylvan Road Texaco, according to police. Officers found an unresponsive man, later identified as Trelle Deshawn Hough, in the parking lot.

Hough, 23, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital but died from his injuries, police said. He was a father of three, including infant twins and a 1-year-old, according to an online fundraising page.

Investigators have not released a possible motive for the shooting but later charged Stroud with Hough’s murder. Last month, police said Stroud had not been located.

On April 9, Stroud was arrested by U.S. marshals in Chattanooga, according to police. He is expected to be returned to Atlanta to face charges.

About a year before the shooting, Stroud was released from prison after serving about seven months for obstruction, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. Then in April 2020, he was charged in Cobb County with entering autos and criminal intent and conspiracy to commit crime, records show. In May, Stroud was again in the Fulton County jail following an arrest on charges of theft, obstruction, and giving a false name, booking records show.
