After a dreary, rainy start to the weekend, sunshine is expected to return to metro Atlanta on Sunday.

With an afternoon high in the low 70s and just a 20% chance of showers, Sunday’s weather will set the tone for a string of rain-free days, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez said.

The day will likely get off to a chilly start, so those with early morning plans may want to bring a light jacket just in case. Sunday will start off in the high 50s before warming up to 73 degrees by about 4 p.m.

“We have some drier and some cooler air moving in just in time for the second part of our weekend,” Lopez said. “We keep the dry weather with us for the next several days.”

Saturday’s storms brought some welcome relief to allergy sufferers, but Atlanta’s pollen count will likely creep back up over the next few days as the rain holds off.

Temperatures will increase to about 80 degrees on Monday and Tuesday before showers return by midweek, according to the latest forecast.

As for traffic, there are several events and construction projects planned this weekend that could lead to delays for metro Atlanta drivers.

With baseball back in full-swing, Cobb County residents may run into some traffic around Truist Park on Sunday evening as the Atlanta Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies for the final game of the series. The stadium won’t be filled to capacity, but drivers could see backups on I-75, I-285 and on surface streets around the Battery ahead of the 7:08 p.m. first pitch.

In Gwinnett County, drivers should expect overnight delays on I-85 as Georgia Department of Transportation crews repair the interstate in both directions between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road. The overnight lane closures are expected to continue each weekend through June.
