Days after an EF4 tornado ravaged Coweta County, metro Atlanta is bracing for another round of severe storms.
Heavy rain is expected to move through North Georgia on Sunday morning, bringing with it strong winds and the possibility of an isolated tornado, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.
The threat will likely last through Sunday afternoon, though the storms shouldn’t be nearly as bad as the one that destroyed Newnan homes and damaged a nearby high school Thursday evening and early Friday.
“That rain chance really goes up as we get into the second half of the weekend,” Deon said. “We’ll have a cold front pushing through, bringing another line of heavy wind and storms.”
The combination of wet soil and strong winds could lead to downed trees and power lines in some areas, she warned. Flash flooding is also possible in low-lying areas.
Sunday’s high is expected to reach 73 degrees in Atlanta, which is about 6 degrees warmer than average for this time of year, according to the latest forecast. Metro Atlanta residents should get a welcome reprieve from the wet weather on Monday, which is expected to be sunny with a high of 66 degrees.
Enjoy it while you can, however. Widespread showers are expected to return on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has several road projects planned this weekend that could lead to road closures and lengthy delays on metro Atlanta’s interstates.
In Gwinnett County, lane closures are planned in both directions of I-85 as crews make repairs between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road. And in Cobb County drivers can expect overnight delays in the southbound lanes of I-75 as crews repair the bridge over Barrett Parkway.
All lanes should reopen in time for Monday morning’s commute.
