After a week of near-perfect weather, rain is expected to return to metro Atlanta on Sunday.

The second half of the weekend won’t be a complete washout, but with a 60% chance of showers there will be “more clouds than sunshine,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

The rain held off on Saturday afternoon, but Sunday’s showers will set the tone for a string of rainy days, according to the latest forecast. Those looking to get outside may want to do so early as the chance of scattered storms increases by mid-afternoon, Deon said.

“Those rain chances are really going to be kicking up on Sunday,” she said. “But we’re going to see even more rain as we head into next week.”

Sunday’s high should reach 78 degrees in Atlanta, which is about average for this time of year. Temperatures will dip slightly by Monday, however, as those showers become more widespread.

The chance of rain jumps to 80% to kick off the workweek, and Monday’s high is expected to reach 76 degrees. Atlanta’s storms are expected to linger through midweek with at least a 60% chance of rain on both Tuesday and Wednesday, Deon said .

“We’re going to see a wet weather pattern next week with cooler temperatures,” she said.

As usual, there are several weekend road projects underway that could lead to delays on metro Atlanta’s interstates and surface streets.

In DeKalb County, overnight lane closures will be installed on I-85 between Clairmont Road and Midtown to replace pavement markings. There are overnight lane closures planned along Buford Highway this weekend for a resurfacing project along the busy thoroughfare.

In Cobb County, drivers should expect daytime delays on Powder Springs Road as crews continue a road widening project. And north Fulton residents could see some backups along Roswell Road as roadwork resumes at Glenridge Drive.

The 1-2 Atlanta Falcons are on the road this week as they look to improve their record Sunday afternoon against Washington, so Atlanta drivers won’t have any downtown stadium traffic to compete with. There could be delays in Cobb County, however, as the NL East Champion Atlanta Braves host the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon at Truist Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:20 p.m., weather permitting.
