A state Senate committee will meet Thursday afternoon to discuss ways to reduce racial disparities in school suspensions.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in January that black students in Georgia were expelled at a rate more than double that of white students and nearly four times as many were suspended. The disparity was greater in metro Atlanta districts, the AJC found.

In March, the Senate passed a resolution that created a committee of senators to examine disparities in suspensions, punishments imposed by school districts and practices and techniques to keep students out of the juvenile justice system.

The committee must complete a report of findings and recommendations by Dec. 1.

The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. in Room 450 of the state Capitol.
