USA Today recently analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau to find cities nationwide where the most people live alone. No roommates, spouses, children or anyone else.

According to their numbers, 10.3 percent of Americans live alone, and 27.9 percent of households have just one individual. Gainesville, Florida, tops this list of cities with the most single dwellers, with 40.4 percent of its households having just one person.

Brunswick is not too far behind that Florida city and well above that national average, with 35.2 percent of its households having one resident. About 26 percent of Brunswick’s population never married. It ranks ninth on the list of cities with the most people living alone.

Interestingly, Macon-Bibb County was two spots below Brunswick in 11th place. One-resident households make up 34.7 percent of the population in the city known for its soul music roots.

Many people live alone following the death of a spouse, especially those older Americans who are less likely to remarry, USA Today reports. The cities where more people are likely to live alone tend to have older populations compared to the U.S. The analysis estimates that some cities may also have higher percentages of people living alone because of a lower cost of living.

The data came from an analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau's 2017 American Community Survey. It was conducted by 24/7 Wall Street, a USA Today partner.
