Authorities are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed part of a flea market in Carrollton early Sunday.
The fire started around 4:30 a.m. at the West Georgia Flea Market on Highway 27 , Carroll County Fire Chief Jimmy Bearden told Channel 2 Action News. The flea market is affectionately called the “Dirt Mall.”
Motorists who saw the flames reported the blaze, Bearden said. The fire shut down part of Highway 27 and kept crews busy for hours, he said.
Bearden said his crews were able to save about 80 percent of the flea market, but many vendors lost everything.
Joe George and his business partner lost their record store where many of their own personal records were on display, George told Channel 2. “Some of the records I have were some of the first records I ever bought. Saved my allowance to buy them,” he said.
The flea market has been in Carrollton for decades and many vendors have been at the market since it opened. Vendors told Channel 2 the flea market is a popular destination for surrounding Georgia counties, and Alabama residents as well.
Owner Tim Dyer told Channel 2 he plans to rebuild and that he’s devastated about the loss for his family, as well as the vendors.
