“Tax Freedom Day” was Monday in Georgia, is April 23 nationally

Taxes are due today, but Georgians have already apparently paid their fair share.

The Washington D.C.-based Tax Foundation does an annual report this time of year on “Tax Freedom Day,” the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay its total tax bill for the year.

As a nation, that day is April 23, the group said, but folks pay different state and local taxes, and it varies from state to state. Georgia has relatively low state taxes and ranks higher for local property taxes. The state’s “Tax Freedom Day” was Monday. It was April 5 in Mississippi, the low-tax-burden champion, according to the foundation. The last state to hit the mark: Connecticut, on May 21.

The foundation said in 2017, Americans will pay $3.5 trillion in federal taxes and $1.6 trillion in state and local taxes. The total tab amounts to 31 percent of the nation’s income.
