Former Gov. Roy Barnes is the new lawyer for House Speaker David Ralston as the Blue Ridge Republican fights possible disbarment over charges he misused client funds and failed to provide adequate representation.
Ralston hired Barnes, a Democrat, on Monday, the same day he also filed a petition suggesting a possible settlement as well as a potential punishment. That document was not made public Wednesday.
Ralston is accused of violating nine State Bar rules and of allowing his duties as a legislator "to adversely affect his representation" of his client. The Supreme Court, which decides punishment against attorneys, appointed Mark Dehler as "special master" of the case.
Ralston could be exonerated, reprimanded or disbarred. In a previous response to the charges, Ralston denied wrongdoing.
