Got $5 million on hand?

If so, you can buy a lot — just the lot, mind you — on Sea Island where eight super-exclusive homes will likely be built in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Banks River. The company that runs the island expects county approval Thursday to begin selling the lots which begin at $3.5 million.

It's uncertain, though, whether the homes on the so-called spit below The Cloister — a favorite coastal retreat for well-heeled Atlantans who can afford rooms that can run $1,000 a night — will withstand erosion and rising sea levels.

Developers want to build a groin into the Atlantic to protect the spit, but environmental groups and some federal officials oppose the plan. A legal fight — only involving the groin — could last five years.
