More than 12,800 voters cast ballots in Georgia’s first widespread use of Sunday voting, according to final tallies from the 11 participating counties.

The result beat expectations and, coupled with Saturday’s mandatory voting day for all 159 counties statewide, significantly boosted Georgia’s overall early-voting totals to more than 440,000. That number, for both in-person and absentee ballots, includes Saturday’s voting tally of 41,968.

Several local elections officials said their Sunday hourly turnout was greater than on other early-voting days. And in Fulton County, the Sunday total helped it beat its overall early-voting total from 2010, the state's most recent midterm election, when voter interest historically dips because it is a nonpresidential election year.

While Georgia’s election laws only mandate at least one Saturday voting day during the 21-day early-voting period, it wasn’t until this year that some local officials decided to try Sundays. Fulton was the only county that also held Sunday voting last week, with a turnout of 1,507.

Here are the voting totals from this Sunday by county:

  • Athens-Clarke: 312
  • Chatham: 767
  • Clayton: 1,739
  • DeKalb: 3,888
  • Fulton: 4,122
  • Dougherty: 499
  • Floyd: 261
  • Liberty: 232
  • Lowndes: 318
  • McDuffie: 195
  • Richmond: 497
