Updated 8:10 p.m.: The Associated Press is declaring insurance salesman and former farmer Jim Hogan the winner in the Democratic primary runoff election for Texas agriculture commissioner. Hogan defeated comedian and perennial statewide candidate Kinky Friedman.

With 7.6 percent of precincts reporting, mostly from early votes, Hogan had a lead of 55.6 percent versus Friedman’s 44 percent.

EARLIER: Not so fast, Kinky. Former farmer and insurance salesman Jim Hogan held a 12-point lead over comedian Kinky Friedman in the Democratic primary runoff for agriculture commissioner, according to the first blush of early voting results.

Hogan had 56 percent of the early vote with 2.1 percent of precincts reporting, while Friedman had 44 percent. The state began to release early voting results just after the polls closed at 7 p.m.

Early voting ended on May 23. Friedman last ran for the Democratic nomination for agriculture commissioner in 2010. He lost in the primary. He also previously ran for governor in 2006 as an independent.
