A Jamaican man who was living illegally in Atlanta and who had been convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon last year was among 2,059 immigrants without legal status who were arrested by federal immigration authorities during a nationwide sweep last week.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not identify the man but said he has also been convicted of breaking and entering, larceny and speeding to elude arrest.

In all, ICE arrested 92 people in Georgia during the five-day “Cross Check” operation, the sixth of its kind. They also apprehended 52 people in North Carolina and 41 in South Carolina.

Among those who were arrested are gang members and people convicted of driving under the influence or committing domestic violence. They will now face deportation.

Corey Price, ICE’s acting Atlanta field office director for enforcement and removal operations, said the arrests show his agency is “committed to doing everything that we can to make the community safer.”
