A Gwinnett County bridge from Georgia 316 to I-85 has been reopened to traffic after highway workers made critical repairs two hours ahead of schedule Tuesday, the state DOT announced.

The Georgia Department of Transportation had estimated work would be competed on the fly-over bridge near Lawrenceville by 5 p.m. but it was completed by mid-afternoon. Earlier in the day drivers used the “Lexus” toll lane for free near while the state made emergency repairs to the south bridge from Georgia 316 to Interstate 85.

The state Department of Transportation said Tuesday it was making emergency repairs because settling of the southern end of the bridge had “created a rut between the asphalt roadway and the concrete bridge structure.”

DOT engineers said they had to close the entire bridge so a “wedge” of asphalt could be used to fill the 100-foot opening created by the settling. The settling on the westbound inside-flyover bridge was reported to engineers at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.
