Legislation that opens up much of the state for licensed gun owners to carry weapons will be debated on the House floor Tuesday.

House Bill 875, by Rep. Rick Jasperse, R-Jasper, would allow Georgians with a license to carry firearms to legally bring guns into churches and bars, into non-secured parts of airports and into government buildings that do not have security screening.

It would also decriminalize guns on college campuses if the person carrying has a license. Instead of being charged with a crime, the license holder would have to pay a $100 fine if caught with a gun on campus.

The Republican majority in the House Rules Committee, which sets the daily floor agenda, voted to limit debate Tuesday to no more than two hours. No amendments will be allowed on the floor.
