The University System of Georgia would take over management of the Georgia Archives under proposed legislation introduced in the House.
House Bill 287 follows a pledge by Gov. Nathan Deal to cut the archives’ ties to the Secretary of State’s Office, where it bore the brunt of budget cuts. At one point last year, it was almost closed to the public except for limited appointments.
Deal would set aside $4.3 million for the archives in next year’s proposed budget, which he unveiled in January. The proposal would fund 10 positions at the Morrow institution, but it would not restore the jobs of five additional employees lost to layoffs Nov. 1.
If approved, HB 287 would transfer management of the archives July 1 — the start of fiscal year 2014.
