New car buyers in Georgia would be able to initially register them for two years instead of one under a measure the House approved this week.

House Bill 147 — sponsored by state Rep. Alan Powell, R-Hartwell — cleared the House on a unanimous vote Tuesday and is now pending in Senate Public Safety Committee.

The bill would not apply to new car owners seeking prestige or special license plates.
