State lawmakers, eager to move quickly to change the date of the 2014 state primary elections, have found an existing bill that will do the trick.
House Bill 310, sponsored by House Ethics Committee chairman Joe Wilkinson, R-Sandy Springs, passed the House in 2013. Then, it was a bill that made minor changes to the law at the request of the state ethics commission — language that was later added to a separate bill that became law.
Wilkinson’s bill will get a hearing before the Senate Ethics Committee today at 2:30 p.m. The old language will be replaced with a new version that sets the 2014 state primaries for May 20, a move that will keep the state and federal primaries on the same day. A federal judge ordered the state to move its federal primary from July to May 20.
The bill will also add a requirement that elected officials file a campaign finance report in advance of the primary.
Because the bill already passed the House, albeit in a different form, once it passes the Senate, the House can sign off on the changes by a simple vote.
