An off-duty Rockdale County sheriff’s deputy was able to take a gun away from a man accused of shooting three people inside a restaurant Sunday night.

The deputy was working a security job at Sudo Bar and Grill on Salem Road when shots were fired around 10:30 p.m., according to the Rockdale sheriff’s office. Deputies believe James Simpson was involved in a fight inside the restaurant before firing shots, the sheriff’s office said.

In a Facebook post, the restaurant manager said the fight started over someone’s drink being accidentally spilled. Three people were shot and taken to a hospital, but none of their injuries were believed life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said.

Simpson was arrested at the restaurant and charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct.

The manager said the shooting was a first at the restaurant.

“We have been open since 2014 and never had a shooting incident, we have signs posted of NO WEAPONS ALLOWED but unfortunately, there are individuals who don’t follow the rules,” a Facebook post said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 770-278-8000.
