Flights into the Northeast are expected to resume Sunday following a massive snowstorm that dumped as much as three feet in parts of the region.
Delta Air Lines began flying to New York City-area airports today and reports flights to other Northeast airports will begin Sunday as conditions allow. Both Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways are expected to resume service Sunday, as well.
Roughly 1,200 Delta flights were canceled ahead of the storm. Southwest Airlines canceled nearly 300 flights, and AirTran Airways canceled more than 50 flights into Northeast airports.
The storm disrupted flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with 97 total cancellations Friday, according to airport spokeswoman Myrna White. Delta canceled 37 flights from Atlanta Saturday and AirTran canceled 10, White said.
White noted that due to advanced storm tracking technology and social media, it’s increasingly rare to see airports filled with stranded travelers.
“They do such a great job tracking weather that they are able to make scheduling adjustments days in advance,” she said. “For the airport itself, there’s not a great impact (from the storm) because of that fact.”
Delta encourages customers to check their flight status at delta.com or via the Fly Delta app. The airline is waiving fees for customers flying through more than 20 airports.
