If you enjoy biking, walking or running on Cobb County’s 12.8-mile portion of the Silver Comet Trail, you may need to plan a new route in the coming months.
Six pedestrian bridges will be closed to the public this winter while Cobb County Department of Transportation crews repair or replace pedestrian bridges, the county said Wednesday. The bridges affected includes those over Powder Springs Creek, Lucille Creek, Noses Creek, Olley Creek, Nickajack Creek and Cooper Lake Road.
From January to April, the bridges will be repaired one by one, leaving no access and no detours, the county said.
“The repairs will preserve the original historic pedestrian bridges,” said Faye DiMassimo, Cobb DOT director. “Once the work is completed, the pedestrian bridges will be reopened providing safe access to all who enjoy using them.”
In addition to the bridge repairs, crews will be repairing fences, drainage systems and grading on the trail.
Warning signs will be posted to keep the public away from construction zones and drop-offs. Although not all areas under construction will be completely closed, trail users are urged to slow down when approaching signs, the county said.
In the spring, additional closures are planned when the trail is re-paved, the CCDOT said. The dates for the re-paving have not been announced.
The Silver Comet Trail is 61.5 miles long and runs from Smryna to the Georgia-Alabama state line.
