In addition to finding new ways to pass the time, many are finding new ways to pay the bills.
Some federal workers have turned to Craigslist to sell their old belongings for some cash. Others are offering handiwork — or even dinner and a movie. Yep, infamous sugar daddy website SeekingArrangement.com, which exchanges cash for dates, says traffic to its website has increased 50 percent since the shutdown began.
Not unlike online dating is the clevery named Unfurlough.us, which offers freelance gigs for sidelined employees. Anyone seeking work can simply upload their resumes and wait to hear back on a part-time job.
If all else fails, blow off some steam with DrunkDialCongress.com — a free site that puts tipsy citizens in contact with random members of Congress. The site provides those prone to slurring their words with a list of talking points.
The site says it processed 2,000 calls in just the first few hours it went live. Makes sense — polls show Congress is currently less popular than toenail fungus, dog poop and Nickelback. (Via Roadrunner Records / "Rockstar")
