Every year, professional designers join talented amateur artists in the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design competition in the hopes of seeing their design printed on 60,000 AJC Peachtree Road Race finisher T-shirts. This year was no different.

In early February, a panel of judges representing the Atlanta Track Club, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other partners chose five design finalists and opened voting to the public.

Junior Designer Shay Harbaugh emerged victorious when that voting ended March 22. She will recieve $1,000 in addition to the victory of seeing her design on those cotton-poly blend shirts.

Here's everything you need to know about Shay and her winning design.

Name: Shay Harbaugh

Design Nickname: Heart & Sole

Occupation: Junior Art Director at Veugeler Design Group in Buford, Georgia.

Why did you decide to enter the design contest?

A co-worker sent me the information for the contest, and it sounded like a lot of fun. As a designer, I believe it’s important to challenge yourself creatively, and entering contests like this are a great way to do that.

How does it feel to be selected as a finalist?

It feels AWESOME! I’m so excited! I feel so honored to be selected as a finalist and to be a part of this amazing event.

Tell us what inspired your design.

Three words inspired me for this design; PRIDE, HEART, and SOUL. The color palette used symbolizes pride, not only for our great country, but for the pride we share for our state. To illustrate heart and soul, I did a play on words. The peach representing “heart” and naturally the sole of the shoe representing “soul.” With every step the runners take in the race they are putting their heart and soul into it getting closer to the finish line.

Have you ever run the AJC Peachtree Road Race? If so, how many times?

Unfortunately, I have not run in the race.
