Scientists at Oregon State University have patented a new strain of edible seaweed they say tastes like bacon.

The researchers say their goal was to create a super food for commercially grown abalone, but a product development team created new foods with the seaweed known as dulse.

Portland-area chefs have been testing it and the word is frying it in strips brings out a "strong bacon flavor."
