More than 30 people have been displaced from their housing complex after a fire early Wednesday in Savannah, according to news station WSAV.

Firefighters responded about 2:50 a.m. to the one-alarm blaze in the 600 block of East Duffy Street, WSAV reported, citing the Savannah Fire Department.

Thirty-four people were displaced, but officials said no one was injured, according to WSAV.

“Police were knocking door to door getting us all to evacuate. They said there was a fire. We all came outside, and I looked over and I seen one of the units on fire, and it was spreading. The fire department got here pretty quick, and they contained it real fast,” tenant Neyle Colquitt told WSAV.

Battalion Chief Elzie Kitchen told the news station that five units were fully engulfed when they arrived on the scene.

“It’s going to be a while before those occupants are able to go in and see if they can salvage anything,” Kitchen told WSAV.

Fire crews worked with the Savannah Police Department and Chatham County Emergency Management Services. All 10 units were damaged by smoke and needed to have the power cut, WSAV reported.

The Red Cross is assisting residents with housing and other needs.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
