As daylight saving time ends, the clouds over Atlanta will finally break but chilly temperatures will remain for the weekend.

Saturday marks the return to standard time, so remember to set your clock back one hour when going to bed. The day should also see a few rays of sunshine as persistent cloud cover that has lingered over northern Georgia all week should finally clear, according to Channel 2 Action News Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns.

“The clouds will begin to break,” Burns said about Saturday afternoon, “We should be in pretty good shape for the rest of the weekend. And our five-day forecast is dry.”

Colder-than-average temperatures will persist throughout the weekend, with a low of 39 degrees Saturday morning warming to a high in the mid-50s, Burns said. Cloud cover will stick around through the morning before breaking up in the afternoon.

“This is something you don’t normally see,” Burns said. “We’re actually warmer in the northeast Georgia mountains at 3 p.m. with 57 in Blairsville than we are in Atlanta with 56 degrees.”

Those same mountains will drop well below Atlanta’s temperatures overnight, plunging into the 30s with conditions cold enough for a frost advisory. Burns advised Atlantans to protect delicate plants from a potentially frosty morning Sunday.

The sun’s reappearance will warm things up over the next several days, with sunny conditions, no rain and temperatures in the mid-60s and 70s from Sunday through Wednesday.

After a day full of sports celebration Friday with the Atlanta Braves World Series championship parade and the road closures that went along with it, the city has no major sporting events taking place Saturday. That doesn’t mean an absence of traffic challenges, though, as roadwork crews plan to take full advantage of good weather conditions to continue projects around town.

In Fulton County, there will be lane closures on I-75 throughout the weekend for bridge rehabilitation at Moores Mill Road, Northside Drive and Howell Mill Road. Additional bridge rehabilitation on I-85 at Cheshire Bridge Road will require lane closures on the highway. In North Fulton, lane closures will be installed along Cumming Highway for a widening project in Alpharetta.

In Cobb County, lanes will be closed Saturday night on Powder Springs Road for resurfacing between Windy Hill and Sandtown roads. Prior to that, daytime closures will be installed on Powder Springs Road from New Mackland Road to Charles Hardy Parkway for widening. There will also be daytime lane closures on Ga. 92 between North Cobb Parkway and Glade Road for a widening project. In South Cobb, there will be overnight lane closures on I-20 between Fulton and Douglas counties for restriping.

DeKalb County will see several highway projects over the weekend, starting with overnight lane closures on I-285 North for safety improvements between Chamblee Dunwoody and Snapfinger roads. Ramp lane closures will be installed at the junction of I-285 and I-675 for bridge rehabilitation. There will also be overnight lane closures on Buford Highway for resurfacing.

Further south on I-675 in Clayton County, more lane closures will be installed for overhead sign installation. There will also be overnight lane closures around the I-75 and I-285 interchange in Clayton as the new collector-distributor lane project continues.
