The persistent rain hovering over metro Atlanta for several days has no plans to take the weekend off.

A high-pressure system to the north has trapped moist, tropical air in much of Georgia, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez.

“That high and that moisture across the south is going to stay in place for the next several days,” Lopez said. “That means more rain for us.”

Saturday’s forecast calls for a 40% chance of rain and scattered showers throughout the day, with the possibility of isolated heavier bursts. A high temperature of 80 degrees is expected with cloudy conditions.

On Sunday, the rain is likely to intensify with chances increasing to 70% and thunderstorms possible.

“No sunshine in sight,” Lopez said. She is predicting up to two inches of rain to fall over the course of the weekend.

Luckily for sports fans, the only major Atlanta sports team playing at home Saturday can close the roof to their stadium. Atlanta United will host D.C. United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Drivers can expect increased traffic around downtown as a result.

Traffic could also be affected by several roadwork projects planned around the metro area, though some projects could be postponed due to weather. In Clayton County, Saturday night will see lane and ramp closures at the interchange between I-75 and I-285 as work continues on the new collector-distributor lanes in the area.

In Cobb County, lane closures will be installed along Powder Springs Road Saturday as a widening project continues.

Fulton County is hosting a long list of roadwork projects this weekend, including the continuation of Atlanta Gas Light work in the southbound lanes of Piedmont Road which will require daily lane closures. There will be overnight lane closures on Langford Parkway for a safety project as well as I-85 North between Midtown and Clairmont Road for restriping.

As usual, watch out for lane closures and traffic pattern changes around the intersection of Ga. 400 and I-285 as the Transform 285/400 project continues.
