Typical summer weather in Atlanta is expected to continue throughout the weekend, starting with a hot, humid Saturday and the possibility of scattered thunderstorms.
“Saturday is starting off in this soupy tropical air,” Channel 2 Action News Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said. “As we go into the afternoon, there could be a few showers in our western suburbs. This side of the state will be the favored area for afternoon showers and storms.”

The metro Atlanta area may see a few sprinkles Saturday afternoon, Burns said. With a high of 88 degrees forecast, the weekend will not bring relief from the previous week’s hot temperatures, though the morning will be cool with temperatures in the low 70s.
While chances of evening showers will remain Saturday night, “for the most part it’ll be dry in and around the metro,” Burns said.
Lakes are at full pool around Atlanta, according to Burns, and Saturday should night should be a good one for night fishing. In fact, Sunday’s full moon is known as the Sturgeon Moon, which may reference the best time to catch sturgeon in the Great Lakes, according to the Old Farmers Almanac. Though you won’t find sturgeon in Georgia’s lakes, August’s first full moon still means good fishing for a variety of native species.
The weather will remain much the same over the next few days, though it will get slightly hotter. The high is predicted to be 90 or above on Sunday and each day at the beginning of the workweek.
Traffic may be lighter than usual this weekend with several major Atlanta sports teams playing out of town and only a handful of construction projects on the roads. The Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United all play away games on Saturday afternoon and evening. It’s the second Saturday in a row with no major sporting events in town.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, keep an eye out for daytime lane closures on Powder Springs Road for an ongoing widening project in Cobb County. Elsewhere in Cobb, lane closures will be installed on Veterans Memorial Parkway to continue a resurfacing project.
In Fulton County, lanes will be closed on I-85 overnight between the Brookwood interchange with I-75 and Clairmont Road for restriping. Also in Fulton, ramps will be closed on I-75 at Jonesboro Road for the installation of wrong-way driving deterrents.
In Clayton County, many lanes around the I-75 junction with I-285 will be closed all weekend for the construction of additional traffic lanes at the busy interchange.
As usual, watch out for lane closures and changes to traffic patterns near the junction of Ga. 400 and I-285 for the ongoing Transform 285/400 project.
