Starting out cold and dry, Saturday will eventually bring rain that could turn into sleet in parts of metro Atlanta.

“We’re going to be cold to start the day, many of us down below freezing Saturday morning,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said. “That rain comes in as we head into the afternoon. When that rain falls through dry air, it causes evaporation and some cooling, so we could have some rain-snow mix or even some sleet.”

A dreary weekend will give way to a warming trend early in the work week.

With temperatures in the 40′s, though, Nitz said there should not be any accumulation on the ground. “Nothing sticks in the metro area,” Nitz said. Saturday’s high is 46 degrees and its low temperature should also remain above freezing at 36 degrees.

Rain will continue into Saturday night but should clear out by Sunday morning. “We’re going to see some sunshine and some blue sky return in the afternoon,” Nitz said.

Temperatures Sunday should break into the low 50′s, with a high forecast of 51 degrees. Between the sun and milder temperatures, Sunday afternoon is likely to be the best time to get outdoors.

It should be dry to start the work week with a nice warming trend to look forward to. Temperatures will hit the mid-50′s Monday and almost touch 60 degrees on Tuesday, though the forecast calls for isolated showers Tuesday as well.

No major traffic events are expected this weekend, although law enforcement agencies are urging Atlantans to be cautious driving Sunday evening thanks to the Super Bowl. Expect to see increased traffic in the late afternoon ahead of the 6:30 p.m. kickoff and again after 9:30 p.m. when the game is likely to be winding down.
