A private school in Sandy Springs cancelled classes and all remaining activities around 1 p.m. as police continued to search for a driver who fled a traffic stop.

Earlier, the Springmont School was in a “shelter in place” mode, meaning all students were inside and school doors were locked, according to an email sent to parents. The lockdown was momentarily lifted, but parents were told around 11:30 that it was back in place.

“Our current information from the police is that a suspect is still at large in the brush behind the school,” said an email to parents. “The police tell us there is no way to know how long this will continue; therefore, students will be dismissed via a controlled release.”

The Montessori school is on Long Island Drive.

According to Sandy Springs police, a driver ran into nearby woods during a traffic stop Monday morning. But officers were unable to locate the driver.
