By now, you know the drill: If it’s the weekend and the weather’s nice, avoid portions of I-20 and I-285 that are likely to be jammed by road construction.
This weekend is no different, according to Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman David Spear, who said GDOT “is asking the public for its continued patience and cooperation in minimizing travel on I-20 and the west and north sides of I-285.”
Here’s what you need to know to avoid what Spear said could be lengthy delays.
I-20 roadwork: Two westbound lanes of I-20 will be closed all weekend just west of downtown, between Whitehall Street and Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard, as will two eastbound lanes of the interstate between I-285 and Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard.
In Rockdale County, two westbound and two eastbound lanes will be shut down all weekend between Almon Road and U.S. 278
Perimeter plans: Two southbound lanes of I-285 will be closed all weekend from Bolton Road to Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway for concrete slab repair and replacement.
Work on sign structures will shut down two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of I-285 between Chamblee Dunwoody and Peachtree Dunwoody roads, also all weekend.
Other sign work will necessitate closing as many as three southbound lanes of I-285 between Northside Drive and the Chattahoochee River from 9 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday.
Fantastic forecast: All of the planned roadwork is weather-permitting, and the weather will certainly be permitting, with sunny skies and dry conditions forecast throughout the weekend.
Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said highs will be in the mid-70s Friday and Saturday and near 80 degrees Sunday, with morning lows in the low 50s Saturday and mid-50s Sunday.
Weekend events: Saturday's battle of the GSUs highlights the local sports calendar this weekend, with Georgia State University hosting Georgia Southern University at 2 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.
In Midtown, the annual Taste of Atlanta festival will be held through Sunday around the Tech Square complex along 5th Street from Techwood Drive to West Peachtree Street and Spring Street from Biltmore Place to Armstead Place.
