Multiple media outlets are reporting NFL player Aaron Hernandez will be charged in connection with a Boston shooting death.
An arrest warrant currently charges the New England Patriots tight end with obstruction of justice, a law enforcement source told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 on Friday.
ABC News is also reporting the issuance of a warrant.
It is possible the criminal charges could be upgraded. It is not known when Hernandez will be taken into custody, or if he will be allowed to surrender to authorities.
Police have searched Hernandez's house and the area around it after 27-year-old semi-pro player Odin Lloyd was found dead in an industrial park about half a mile from Hernandez's home. Lloyd, who had been shot in the head, was driving an SUV rented in Hernandez's name. Lloyd was dating a woman who is the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee, according to the Associated Press.
ABC News reports police want to know why Hernandez destroyed home security system video and his cell phone and hired a cleaning crew to work at his mansion Monday.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not yet taken action against the football player.
Should Hernandez be arrested, Goodell could punish him under the NFL's personal conduct policy. Goodell generally prefers to await the outcome of all legal proceedings before acting, says The Associated Press.
Hernandez, 23, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. He was selected to play in the 2011 Pro Bowl.
He won the BCS National Championship while playing with the Florida Gators in 2009.
