Slim Jxmmi, whose real name is Aaquil Iben Shamon Brown, and younger brother Khalif Malik Ibn Shamon Brown, whose rap name is Swae Lee, were raised by Sullivan in the Ida Street Housing projects in Tupelo.

The brothers developed a love for producing music and rapping at a young age, and they eventually moved to Atlanta to work with prolific producer Mike Will Made-It. They were signed to his indie record label Made-It Mafia.

Just a day before news broke of their stepdad’s killing, Rae Sremmurd celebrated the fifth-year anniversary of their debut album “SremmLife.” The record was released on Jan. 6, 2015, and featured their breakthrough singles “No Flex Zone" and “No Type."

Swae Lee later tweeted Tuesday in what appeared to be a reference to his stepdad’s killing.
