The next Powder Springs Citizen Police Academy starts on Sept. 10.

Participants will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday for 10 weeks at the Powder Springs Police Department, 1114 Richard D. Sailors Parkway.

Registration is required.

The application may be completed online or delivered to the police department.

Photo identification will be required before the background check can be completed.

The free academy provides an opportunity for residents to learn about police operations.

Through lectures, field trips and simulated activities, residents are provided training similar to that of an actual police officer.

The academy's goal is to build understanding between the community and the police.

Course curriculum includes criminal law, patrol procedures, mock trial, accident reconstruction, criminal investigations, crime scene processing and defensive tactics.

Residents also will have opportunities to attend firearms training at Glock, Inc. and ride along with an officer on patrol.

Applicants must be at least 18 and pass a criminal history background check.

Information: police department, 770-943-1616.
