Investigators said the gunman approached four or five people who were circled around a fire pit shortly before 6:15 p.m., where he shot a man in his late 50s.

Police said the gunman, who was wearing a ski mask and black clothing, ran away from the scene.

They said they believe the man eventually left the area in a vehicle, because K-9 dogs lost track of his scent.

"I don't think it was random. It's like he singled that particular person out," DeLand police Chief Jason Umberger said. "It's disturbing, to say the least, that somebody would be that brazen to do this in front of other people."

None of the people involved were publicly identified.

The shooting remains under investigation.
