A Grady ambulance crew was taken to the hospital this morning after a collision with a suspected drunken driver, police said.
Just after 4 a.m., police said the ambulance was traveling north on Boulevard through the Irwin Street intersection in northeast Atlanta when a gray pickup truck ran the red light, Atlanta police spokesman Capt. Jack Snowden said.
“The pickup ran the red light, entering the path of the ambulance causing the accident,” Snowden told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The pickup continued east, however it became disabled. That’s how we caught up with it.”
The front right wheel came off the pickup, and it eventually came to a stop.
The driver of the pickup was cited for failing to obey an electronic traffic signal and DUI, and was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, Snowden said.
The two ambulance crew members complained of injuries and were also taken to the hospital, police said.
