Tornado hits Spalding County - April 2011

Photos: A tornado in April 2011 killed two people in Spalding County south of Atlanta and tore apart buildings in Sunny Side near Griffin.

April 2011: Kirk Green looks over the site in Brooks where his brother, Charlie Green, perished along with his caretaker, Jamie White, during the overnight storms.

Charlie Green, a plumber, required round-the-clock care due to a stroke. Jamie White had recently taken a job as one of his nurses in order to help support her young children. Both died in the tornado that hit Green's mobile home.

Joe Machado leaves the area where he pulled his wife, Zel, out of their home's collapsed upper floors. The couple and their special-needs child, Breana, 12, survived the storm in Brooks.

Kylie Peavy, shown here with her mother, Stacey Peavy, was blown out of her bedroom by the storm and found in a side yard by her mother. She had only minor injuries. They huddled in their house with other family members until the tornado passed.
