2nd Annual Scooter Day at the Georgia Capitol promotes economical alternatives for commuters.

Washington Street in front of the Capitol became a temporary parking area for scooters as scooter enthusiasts from around metro Atlanta ride to the Capitol to celebrate the second annual Atlanta Scooter Commuter Day.

Steven Sheffer of the Scooter Superstore in Jacksonville, FL turns on the flashing lights on a demonstration model of a three-wheel Piaggio MP3 500cc scooter outfitted for police use. Law enforcement agencies across the country, including the New York City police, are beginning to use scooters. They are starting to catch on for use on college campuses, at industrial and office parks, parking lots and at hospital facilities.

The event, which is sponsored by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, is aimed at promoting the safe use of scooters as an environmentally sound method of combating pollution and alleviating Atlanta's choking traffic.

Floyd Grimm of Chamblee shows some of the buttons and patches decorating his jacket. Grimm, who works at a scooter store, owns eight scooters and drives a scooter for about 90 per cent of his traveling on the roads, he said. He rode a vintage 1965 Vespa 150 scooter to the Capitol for the event.

Adam Greenberg, a "renegade" according to his business card, with Eco Moto in Atlanta helps himself to some coffee on the back of a heated delivery scooter.
