Michael Vick's former home ready for auction

Disgraced Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick's home in Sugarloaf Country Club went to auction March 10 but did not sell. The former NFL star is serving a federal prison sentence on felony charges related to dogfighting.

Text by KATIE LESLIE: This nearly 20,000-square-foot home is one of Sugarloaf Country Club's most notable estates. The eight-bedroom mansion once belonged to suspended Falcons star quarterback Michael Vick. It went to auction March 10 for a minimum of $3.2 million but did not sell. Funari Realty is handling the sale.

The three-floor home at 2927 Darlington Run opens into a gracious two-story foyer with a jaw-dropping chandelier. Flanking curved stairways create a picture-perfect welcome. Vick, who is serving a 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy, will be allowed to serve the last two months of his federal prison sentence under home confinement in Virginia.

Two-story windows and soaring tray ceilings are a grand frame to the home's lake views. Funari realtor Lance Hempen estimates the ceilings to be at least 35 feet.

A formal dining room off the kitchen is punctuated with intricate wainscoting and ceiling molding. According to Gwinnett County property records, Vick purchased the home in April 2005 for $3.77 million.

The kitchen and breakfast nook are designed in a great-room style. They overlook a casual living room and with backyard views.

As if dome and tray ceilings weren't enough, this casual seating area features a barrel ceiling. Hempen says he has shown the home to many interested buyers. Some are curious about the estate because of its owner, while others are unaware of its history.

The home features several custom built-ins, such as this butler's pantry in the great room.

Having an elevator, or at the very least a shaft for future installation, is a necessity in a house of this size, Hempen says.

Hempen says this room isn't so much a study as a boardroom. Floor-to-ceiling cherry paneling adds richness to the two-story space.

The boardroom and master suite share this terrace. Views of the clubhouse are to the right.

The main-floor master bedroom is accented with triple tray ceilings and a gas fireplace. The decor hasn't changed much since Vick vacated the property in 2007, though most of his personal possessions have been removed.

Vick selected casual sofas throughout most of the home, including for his sitting area off the master bedroom.

The master suite offers a large private bath with double vanities and walk-in closets larger than most New York apartments.

The home features eight bedrooms, four on the top floor. Most of the rooms have simple furnishings, and each top-floor guest room has a walk-in closet and private bath.

Even the guestrooms boast vaulted ceilings, a decorative theme throughout the mansion.

This bedroom takes a decidedly girly turn from the rest of the house. Vick's children stayed in this fun space, complete with a chalkboard wall.

A swirling staircase leads to this downstairs den. Nowhere is it more apparent than here that this was Vick's residence. Hempen says while he doesn't advertise that the home belonged to the former athlete, he tells curious buyers that the No. 7 was his client's college number. In the background, Vick practiced his swing in this golf simulator.

Much of the home's accessories were packed up, save for these jazz figurines.

Black panther sculptures can be found throughout the home.

The home theatre has state-of-the-art equipment despite its sparse furnishings.

A downstairs bar is entertainment central with the theater, game room and golf simulator nearby.

The bar features unusual details, such as this lion corbel.

The basement features this fitness room with adjoining sauna and bath.

This sitting area on the basement level receives lots of tranquil sunlight, a respite from the recreational rooms down the hall.

Selling homes with noteworthy owners has some challenges, but is far from impossible, said RE-MAX realtor Patrick Finnick, who handled the sale of "Mansion Madam" Lisa Ann Taylor's home, also in Sugarloaf. "You never know who is in the market to buy the house and what their perception of the home may be," he said. "They may be able to see far beyond Michael Vick."
