Dream owner's home reflects new beginning

"I realized my life wasn't about Kathy and Garry anymore. It was about Kathy," she said. "It was good therapy for me. All of a sudden, I got excited about life again. It was really a new beginning for me."

The builder and project manager worked with her builder, Hardy Smith, to create the unit just for her in the gated Atlanta community just off I-285 on Powers Ferry Road. The corner unit, about 4,000 square feet, faces the woods and a stream.

Nearly a third of the 3,000 first-edition books that Garry Betty collected and Frabel glass pieces that Garry purchased for Betty fill the bookshelves in the library/dining room/office on the main level.

White cabinetry in the kitchen helps achieve the design Betty calls "Cape Cod elegant."

The dining room features a pine kitchen table that is tinted lavender.

The color palette of blue, green, lavender, gold, ivory and other calming hues throughout the home, including in one of the guest bedrooms, connect to Betty's Cape Cod vision.

A color palette of tangerine, blue and green pops off the walls and bedding in a bedroom for Betty's great-nephews and great-niece.

Paintings of marbles incorporate the color scheme.

The master suite incorporated the only piece of furniture from Betty's previous home -- a handmade rosewood bed.

The multicolored tile and a free-floating soaking tub in the master bath help achieve a spalike setting.

Some of Betty's art collection can be seen in a guest bedroom. "Art is personal, so there were pieces of art that I brought from my other house that meant something to me," Betty said. The bedroom also shows off the tongue-and-groove ceilings she favored for the home.

A unique granite countertop in the design of pebbles was selected for the kitchen on the top level and served as inspiration for that floor. "It was designed around the granite," Betty said. "I fell in love with the granite."

A gold mirror in the stairway connects to the pebble motif.

The fourth-floor media room is outfitted with black leather recliners and a 60-inch TV, the home's largest.
