The Atlanta Journal-Constitution honored 10 of Georgia's best nurses at the eighth annual ajc jobs Nursing Excellence Awards event on May 7 at the Cobb Galleria Centre. The top 10 honorees for 2013 are (front row from left) Sheny Hill, Nancy Fischer, Elizabeth King, Katie Oldham, Dorothy Reeves, (back row from left) Victoria Inouye, Gaby Sussman, Christopher Piller, Andrea Callahan and Marilyn Anchors.

Top 10 honoree Marilyn Anchors, a nurse at Coralwood School, saved the life of a blind, wheelchair-bound student who was having a seizure.

Andrea Callahan, a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, draws on the experience of delivering her own daughter prematurely to help her patients and their families.

Top 10 honoree Nancy Fischer was nominated for her exemplary treatment of a mentally challenged heart patient before and after surgery at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

Top 10 honoree Sheny Hill, a nurse at WellStar Cobb Hospital, took a terminal cancer patient home to Guatemala to see his mother before he died.

Top 10 honoree Victoria Inouye, a nurse at Southern Regional Medical Center, helped a deaf-mute man communicate medical decisions for his critically ill deaf wife.

Top 10 honoree Elizabeth King is a medical/surgical nurse at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.

When fellow Emory University Hospital nurse Jennifer Owens was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, top 10 honoree Katie Oldham helped her work from home, convinced co-workers to donate some of their paid time off, and arranged for transportation and meals.

Top 10 honoree Christopher Piller was nominated for the way he comforted the family and friends of a man who died at Athens Regional Medical Center after an auto accident.

Top 10 honoree Dorothy Reeves, a nurse at Rockdale Medical Center, was nominated for her efforts to help clothe refugees, feed the homeless and serve people during medial missions to Haiti.

Top 10 honoree Gaby Sussman, a nurse at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, was nominated for the compassion she showed a 14-year-old girl during her recovery from two brain surgeries.

Karen Eason (left) and Terrie Promis were given honorable mention recognition. Eason, a nurse at 1st America Infusion Services in Valdosta, was nominated for the way she treated a girl who has a chromosome disorder. Promis, a certified registered nursing assistant at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, was cited for her fundraising efforts for Canine Assistants, an organization that trains service and seizure response dogs for people with disabilities and illnesses.
